Consequences of Insufficient Healthcare Plans in India
Even though the country invests a lot of money in healthcare and has many private healthcare options, a significant number of people still can't get health insurance. People haven't really thought about or talked much about the idea of making sure everyone has insurance to take care of their health and prevent diseases, especially in politics.
Because many healthcare plans in India don't give enough access or protection, people end up paying a lot for medical costs from their own pockets. This seriously affects the quality of life for many people. On top of that, a lot of people in India don't really know about the advantages of health insurance, so they don't see it as a good investment.
It's not really the fault of these individuals. When there is discussion about health policies, it usually revolves around family well-being or specific diseases like polio, tuberculosis, and HIV. These focused programs are often driven more by the government's budget goals than the actual need to improve the Health Access and Quality (HAQ) index. In 2016, India ranked lower than Bangladesh, Sudan, and Equatorial Guinea, scoring 41.2 points at 145th place.
A person who used to work for the planning commission mentioned that politicians focus more on areas like farming, business, and building things, leaving healthcare lower on their list of important issues. As a result, the quality of basic and hospital care for poorer people is not good, especially with more chronic diseases on the rise. This makes health insurance even more necessary. In contrast, developed countries like Canada, the U.K., and Australia have had universal healthcare for a while now.
For health insurance to be common in Indian households, we need to make big changes in how things are set up. The first step is to spread more information about health insurance and make sure that healthcare providers and the systems overseeing them are accountable. We want healthcare to be good quality, not too expensive, and fair for everyone. It's also really important to control how much money is spent on healthcare and make sure that chronic diseases affecting both young and old people in the country are taken care of properly.
On a personal level, making health insurance a priority will give more people a sense of security when it comes to their medical needs. This can reduce the stress about money and empower individuals to hold their representatives accountable for the state of healthcare in the country.
